Welcome to the Mountain Christian League (MCL)
The members of the Mountain Christian League desire to put Christ first in our league activities, and to promote Christian character within our schools, teams, coaches, and athletes. Therefore, we wish to encourage sportsmanship, further the spirit of cooperation and Christian fellowship between our members, foster a common interest in sports, and submit to the authority of God in our relationships with one another.

2023 MCL Varsity Basketball Tournament
Format & Details
The Oaks is delighted to have the opportunity to host the Mountain Christian League basketball tournament this year! Athletics are a wonderful opportunity to fellowship with other people; we hope this tournament will be a time of God-honoring fellowship amongst all the league schools. Please take the time to read through the following information. As these are rented facilities, we ask that you help us to be good stewards of them.
Tournament Information & Managers
If at any time you have questions during the tournament, you may visit the “Tournament Information” table located in The Oaks school. You may also contact a Building Manager. Our building manager for the 2023 MCL Basketball Tournament is:
-
Colin Williams (Athletic Director) 509-263-9936
Facilities
The Oaks (11711 E. 24th Ave., Spokane Valley, WA 99206)
Bowdish Middle School (2109 S Skipworth Rd, Spokane Valley, WA 99206)
Evergreen Middle School (14221 E 16th Ave, Spokane Valley, WA 99037)
Gym & Building Rules
Please observe the following rules for the tournament:
-
Only authorized people will be allowed on the playing floor. All spectators, including teams waiting to play, must stay off the floor.
-
Please stay away from the scorer’s table.
-
Do not bounce balls anywhere in the gym while games are being played.
-
Players must wear clean court shoes with non-marking soles.
-
Artificial noise makers such as bells, whistles, air horns, and megaphones are not allowed.
-
School spirit displayed with signs is encouraged and should show POSITIVE support.
-
Parents with children are asked to keep them close to you at all times to prevent injury or game interference. Children should not be allowed to roam free in the building.
-
Only athlete’s, team personnel, and tournament staff are allowed in hallways and classroom, please. An exception would be a parent looking for their student athlete. Please keep all children supervised at all times!
Concessions
We will be providing expanded concessions throughout the tournament. Please help us be good stewards of the facility by cleaning up after yourself. Please contact a building manager immediately if you need cleaning supplies for any spills or messes.
Tournament Format
Teams will compete as outlined in the tournament bracket, which is located in the center of this program. All games will be conducted according to the NFHS guidelines with the exception of 10 minute half-times. The higher seeded team is always the home team.
For the Fans
In order to help facilitate our desire for a God-honoring tournament, we ask you keep the following principles in mind regarding cheering.
Cheering:
-
SHOULD encourage players
-
SHOULD encourage coaches
-
SHOULD encourage, yes, even referees
-
(In light of the fact that we represent both our schools and Christ) SHOULD NOT degrade others
“Bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8
Tournament Schedule
Games will be played according to the tournament bracket. The length of warm-ups will depend on the ending time of the previous game (12 minutes is the typical time). Games will not start early. If the previous game goes long, we may shorten the warm-up time. In the event that a game does go long, teams must be ready to begin warm-ups right away.
Scorers & Timers
The home team is responsible to provide a scorebook and bookkeeper to serve as the official scorebook for each game, but in the case of a disagreement, the referees will defer to the home book. The Oaks will provide scoreboard operators.
Awards
Trophies will be presented for first, second, and third place teams. Additionally, we will be awarding a trophy to each member of the All-League team (there will be a 1st Team All-League and a 2nd Team All-League) and a plaque to the team that has demonstrated the highest level of sportsmanship throughout the season. The sportsmanship and All-League awards are voted upon by each team in the league. The regular season champions will be awarded the traditional traveling trophy affectionately named the “Gold Ball.”
Pre- and Post-Game Ceremonies
We will begin each game with a short prayer, starting line-ups and any pertinent announcements. We hope to conclude each evening with singing of the Doxology. Players, fans, coaches, and referees are encouraged to join in the singing (find the words on the back of the program). The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies will be awarded immediately after a team wins a trophy. The All-League and Sportsmanship trophies and plaques will be awarded after the boys 3rd place game. Finally, the “Gold Ball” (awarded to the school who wins the league during the regular season) will be presented after the boys 3rd place game as well.
As a reminder, please do not allow children to roam, keeping them supervised at all times. Thank you!
